Learning the International Phonetic Alphabet: A Comprehensive Guide (REVISED)

How to read IPA for Thai learners

สวัสดีค่ะทุกคน!

👉 Previously, I adopted the IPA system from Sumaa Language and Culture Institute to create posts and use it in my class for a few years. As you may know, there are various types of IPA systems used by Thai teachers, confusing many Thai learners.

👉Fortunately, last year, there was a conference related to the IPA for teaching foreigners. The scholars discussed a framework based on the Internationa Phonetic Alphabet which is widely used by linguists as an alternative system to teach foreigners and for other Thai scholars when conducting their research.

👉As far as I know, the conference publication will be published at the end of this year. When the paper is published, I'll let you know. Therefore, to avoid the confusion of my following posts, the new IPA will be applied.

👉What they changed are as follows;

1. /j/ is represented as ย ยักษ์ (y sound in English). It can be occurred in the initial consonant and the final consonant.

2. ɛ is represented as สระ แ-ะ.

3. ɛɛ is represented as สระ แ-.

4. /-aj/ will be used for สระ ไ-, ใ-.

5. ̄ This marker will be applied for the middle tone. For example, kāa means a crow (กา).

6. ia represents เ-ียะ, เ-ีย.

7. ɨa represents เ-ือะ, เ-ือ.

8. ua represents -ัวะ, -ัว.
